In the past years, slow fashion has taken over social media. In this case, “slow” means being more sustainable, conscious, ethical, and overall better. Continue reading to know more about slow fashion.
What Slow Fashion Is
Kate Fletcher, from the Centre for Sustainable Fashion, created the term “slow fashion.” Because of the fast-paced fashion industry, she thought of the need for slow processes, quality, the durability of clothes, and ethical consumerism to prevent the environment from becoming more damaged and save humans from the consequences in the future.
It is also described as a method that considers different factors such as supply chains, resources, living wages, pollution, animal life, and environmental effects. Therefore, buying less is the way to slow and consciously shop.
It also means investing in quality products that will last a long time and from brands that support equality among people, animals, and the earth.
Ways to Shop Slow
Of course, you can do more things to support slow fashion aside from buying quality products from sustainable and ethical brands.
- You choose the clothes you will buy well to buy less. For example, you can consider how often you will wear a particular piece and how much you want it. Will it give you happiness just now, or will you still be happy with it in the coming months?
- You can make an environmental protest through your purchases. You can invest in brands that support the earth and ban those that negatively affect humans and the planet.
- If you show care and love to your clothes, they will last for a long time. Therefore, it is best to hand wash delicate pieces, brush, and air dry knitwear. You can mend and polish your clothes to keep them safe and nice. When your clothes look good, you feel good as well.
- Before throwing your old clothes away, you can check what materials are used to manufacture them. If the material can be recycled, you can take these clothes to a recycling center. Another option is to upcycle your old clothes and turn them into totes, dust bags, and many other things.
